DEATH: Gratiot Co., Seville Twp, in Michigan shows a death date for a John PeterSON of July 31, 1907. According to the Census John died between 1900 and 1910. This date is consistent with that. Also the birth date is consistent with an age of 64 yr, 5 mo, 15 days at death. It is the only possible entry for the death of John Peterman listed in the index. There was one other John PeterSON, but it showed born in Sweden. In fact this cert shows died in Germany and Peterson is not a German name. I believe the recorder may have made a mistake in recording the name of the decedent. I also see a burial for a John PeterMAN in Seville Twp, Gratiot County, Michigan, lot D 031, with a death date of July 31, 1907. This confirms the above death record is really for this John Peterman.
Although the above death date is consistent with the census information, it does not agree with the family story. Doris says he died long before Nellie was md. They said the father left a young family where the teenage William had to help raise the younger sisters and brother. This does not add up.
PARENTS: Whether or not the listed parents for John Peterman are correct depends on whether the above is a valid death cert for John Peterman. Doris thought John's wife's maiden name was Stout. That is not the case, but it is a possibility it could be the maiden name of John's mother.
FAMILY: Doris said John was the youngest of 6 or 7 boys. This is not right; he had a younger brother Charles living with him in 1880. Doris said they left Prussia and went to Canada - the other boys stayed in Canada. They left Germany because the father didn't want his sons to be "gun fodder."
