Running DOS AutoCAD under Microsoft Windows 95

Symptom: AutoCAD prompts for configuration every time it is run.

Solution: DOS versions of AutoCAD cannot properly write its configuration files to the FAT32 filesystem that is the default for Windows95. Therefore, it is necessary to create a FAT16 partition for AutoCAD to run on, then it will be able to correctly write its configuration files.

If you do not have free, un-partioned space on a drive, or a separate drive on which to create a FAT16 partition using fdisk, you may wish to use Partition Magic to create a new partition. In my case, my Win95 is on a dual-boot installation of RedHat 6.1 linux, and I was able to use GNU parted to create a new, FAT16 partition. After creating and formatting a FAT16 partition, copy all the AutoCAD files to this partition. Run acad and configure; it will now remember its configuration.
