Introduction

The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) is no longer a small ‘religious family’ from the late ‘60s.  It has grown into a worldwide movement that has a reasonable influence on modern mainstream society.  As its founder acarya Srila Prabhupada envisioned, ISKCON is supposed to be welcoming to all sincere people who are serious about making a positive spiritual change in their life.  ISKCON’s profound Vedic philosophy, ancient traditional roots, values and culture attract a vast variety of people from different cultural backgrounds, races, and, of course, different sexual orientations. >>>

There’s More to "OM"

We’ve all heard the jokes: "Om, om on the range," or "Om, my aching back." We’ve seen meditation instructors and yoga teachers enunciate it with great reverence. Bhakti-Tirtha Swami Sets the Stage for His final Suffering

Dear Maharajas, Prabhus and disciples

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

This is probably the penultimate special message of wisdom from the ground hog aka the beggar aka spiritual warrior. So let this prepare you for the ultimate message. (smile) You can see that this kind of communication that I am doing must actually come to a stop. Firstly because it is natural, for I definitely have to get out of this body sometime in the near future, but also because if I am not careful, this sort of communication could become my biggest failure. Just consider how every time I send out some of these messages, so many nice devotees all around the world write and call and offer me kindness and praise. Yes, this is wonderful but can you see all the danger in this? One of Maya’s most special tricks is to get the devotee who has acquired some little achievement to start thinking, ‘just see, I am an advanced devotee.’ For instance, if I’m not careful and if I let myself start thinking in this way, then when the helpers come to take me out of the body they’ll take me straight to Brahmaloka or some place of this nature. They’ll say, ‘this was your final test and you accepted certain adoration and glorification as your own, therefore go ahead and enjoy now for 311 trillion years managing your own planet or universe.’ Isn’t Maya just so tricky? (Smile) When Vasudeva the leper was healed by Krishna he prayed very intensely ‘please do not let me become proud’.  >>>

Dear Maharajas, prabhus and disciples

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I am like the ground hog that lives in the ground and every now and then he pokes his head out of the ground. I am like the guy who’s being stubborn about death, who every now and then sticks his head out (just like the groundhog) and tries to share something. I’ve had so many realizations in these last few months and there is no fun in trying to keep them to myself. For instance, every time a god brother or god sister came to visit me I would pray to Srila Prabhupada to allow me to say something to help inspire that devotee in the continuation of their services. In cases where Srila Prabhupada revealed an issue to me that the devotee needed to work on, I would try to offer some hopefully, humble advice. I learnt so much from all the devotees that came and they’re still writing to me. Hopefully I shared something that helped them in various ways. Now that I am getting closer to death I am beginning to look closer at my whole life. I see a pattern, as I was always praying to be forced by Srila Prabhupada to do what was necessary in his service - I can see that I was forced by so much mercy. >>>

"Lessons on the Road"

Since leaving Sri Lanka in late February I have had several dreams of the devastation caused by the tsunami and of the victims that I attended to. That real-life drama left an indelible impression on my mind. Even the most beautiful scenes of nature now appear tainted, for I realize more than ever before that everything in this world is temporary and subject to destruction.

In late March, I took a flight from London to Los Angeles for my annual two-month preaching tour through the United States. But I could not forget the tsunami, so unlike some of the other passengers, I was unimpressed by the glory and glitter of America upon our arrival. Many were awestruck at the well-organized and efficient procedures for customs and immigration in the huge arrival halls, amidst the latest technology and sophisticated security. And when we stepped outside the terminal, I recognized two passengers who stood motionless-mesmerized by the bigness of the American scene before them. >>>

Letter of Condolence on the Passing of His Holiness Pope John Paul II

Maharajas and Prabhus,

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Below is the official letter of condolence sent this morning by the Communications Department to the Vatican.

It can also be sent as a media release that may be helpful if you choose to forward the statement to your local media outlets. We will be doing that for the Indian media in the United States.

Your servant,

Anuttama dasa

April 3, 2005

We are saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope John Paul II and offer our condolences to our Catholic friends worldwide along with our heartfelt wishes that they find joy and strength in remembrance of his selfless service to God

The passing of John Paul II is a great loss not only to the Roman Catholic Church, but to all people of faith. As a religious leader, Pope John Paul II fought for his principles as vigorously as he practised them, giving strong, meaningful guidance to his Church. We pray that these qualities of leadership and commitment will continue to serve as an example to all.

As a Vaishnava community, we are especially thankful for the Pope's firm yet compassionate defence of the dignity and sanctity of human life, his sincere appeal for the protection of the oppressed and weak, and for his call to the younger generation to seek purpose in life through devotion to God.

We also honour His Holiness's call for dialogue between faiths and between churches within his own Christian faith. He affirmed the Catholic Church's commitment to the spirit of building sincere relationships with others without compromising the Church's unique sense of mission and witness. As with so many aspects of his life, he achieved this with courage and humility.

Pope John Paul II was a man who preached strongly, practiced humbly, and acted compassionately. He and the Roman Catholic Church are in our prayers.

It’s become a tradition at the Brooklyn Hare Krishna temple that my friends and I regularly engage in a particular game of words. It goes like this: Since Krishna consciousness is all encompassing, having relation to all material and spiritual phenomena, we choose a word at random and see how it connects to our philosophy. For example, at a recent Sunday feast, one of my friends said, “ice,” noticing that the lemonade in each of our cups contained large ice cubes. As quickly as the word emanated from his lips – we were off, thinking how “ice” might possibly relate to Krishna consciousness. >>>

The question has to do with the suffering you have seen and are seeing devotees undergo. You're desire is to alleviate their suffering. Can that be done other than assisting devotees to uplift their consciousness? Can suffering be removed on the physical level? >>>

Plain and simple. The same message came through in a recent Time magazine article (January 12). The title: "How Now, Mad Cow?" The lead-in: "Big beef was doing fine until disease felled a heifer. Will consumer anxiety cripple the industry?" That week’s issue of Newsweek ran a similar article, entitled, "Mad Cow: What’s Safe Now?" Chicken and the Egg
Why Devotees of Krishna Don’t Eat Eggs

Having studied the Krishna movement for nearly thirty years, I am modified by their diverse reasons for adhering to a vegetarian diet. They feel compassion for all living entities; they’re aware of the health benefits, conscious of the politics, economy, and so on. But their main reasons are ethical and even metaphysical. They don’t eat eggs for the same reasons they don’t eat meat, chicken, or fish—because Krishna doesn’t ask for it. In the Bhagavad-gita (9.26), He tells the world what foods He accepts, and how these foods should be offered to Him: "If one offers Me with love and devotion a leaf, a flower, fruit, or water, I will accept it." While the list implies vegetables and other "of the earth" products, like spices, Krishna augments this list in other scriptural texts to include dairy products.. >>>

I also had advised him not to cut this tree, but build around it and let it shade the courtyard.

All the devotees are so angry, they told me they have cursed that he will never be able to stay in Braj. They have cursed that he will never be happy. They have cursed that this project fail. They have vowed to boycott any opening ceremony should anything be built there. They have cursed that nobody will feel happy to stay there. Why, I wondered, do so many believe, especially in light of our modern age of science? This is a time when, if things aren’t empirically proven, they are basically left at the wayside. Of course, a good number of believers have simple faith, and that is that. But there is a burgeoning scientific community, too, offering additional impetus for statistics like those above. >>>

Dear Disciples and well wishers
Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

I want to apologise, as I won't be able to travel to visit any of you in your various temples and projects. The cancer is spreading everyday. The tumours in my body are also getting larger everyday. My main personal caretaker at this time in addressing issues with my body is Dhruva Maharaja Dasa from S. Africa, he literally sleeps in the room with me every night. I am waking up about every hour and a half. I am not able to get up on my own to go to the bathroom so I have to be wheelchaired into the bathroom. He and Ekavira also have to bathe me each day. In many ways I've become fully an invalid, as some caretakers have to be with me at every moment of the day. We're seeing externally the tumours are getting bigger and we can understand that internally the cancer is gradually spreading all over the body with tremendous vigour. Now I'm mainly doing some treatments to try to minimise and dull the pain. At this point I could have weeks or (I’m so stubborn) still a few months. H! owever, I really don't see how the soul will be able to stay in this body for months due to its rapid deterioration. Even though I'm still giving the classes once a week, which I hope you're all listening to, it has become so hard for me. On Sunday just driving from Institute house to the temple on the bumpy road in Gita Nagari, I felt like my already cancerous and damaged collar bone was going to fully break. It also felt as if my head and neck were too heavy for my shoulders and chest. At the same time however, I am dying on the battle field. Three days ago I did a one hour live radio show over the telephone and yesterday morning devotees managed to prop me up and dress me very nicely to make a recording for the Oprah Winfrey show. It seems that we have an angle to share with millions of people around the world who watch the show. Let us see if she picks up on this before I depart. It doesn't really matter, as the message has already been recorded, as well as the fact that my life has been my message in the rather unique way that I served Srila Prabhupada's mission. >>>

pp. xix + 448. New York: Columbia University Press, 2004. Hardcover $49.50.

Although I am not part of the academic community as such, my interest in commenting on Bryant and Ekstrand’s book arises from three related concerns: First, I have been part of the Hare Krishna Movement for thirty-two years and I am also a disciple of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. (This is his more formal name. He is also referred to as Srila Prabhupada, especially by his disciples. To avoid confusion, I will here refer to him as Bhaktivedanta or sometimes Bhaktivedanta Swami, since this is how he is addressed in the current volume.) Secondly, I am always attentive when a distinguished group of intellectuals, practitioner or otherwise, offers insights into my own religious tradition, for they often carry perspectives that we who are close to the tradition might easily miss. Also—and this is the third point—since both scholars and adherents are represented in the volume under discussion, it seems evident that there should be both academic and insider responses to the book as well. I understand that the editor of the Journal of Vaishnava Studies [for which this review was originally written] has commissioned an academic response. My contribution will be from the perspective of the practitioner. >>>

At a recent family gathering I started to talk about Krishna consciousness and its value in my life. For my immediate family, such talk is something they’ve become accustomed to. But for people I see infrequently, this brought them back many years, to the early days of my "conversion,” as they refer to it.

Apparently, my Uncle Sidney was particularly challenged by much of what I had to say.

Over 75% of our surveys are in. In September of 2004 our web site was launched with a number of goals to find out how we could best serve the devotees. Among those  was our "Anonymous Survey." With only less than 25% needed to complete the English language study, we are able to give a sneak preview at one of the questions which seems to stand out the most among them.

Although many of the answers are quite varied, this question seemed to draw special attention to our team. >>>

Mathematics and the Spiritual Dimension

I remember the time my father pulled me aside and said, "Son, you can explain everything with math." He was a rationalist, and for him God existed only in the sentiments of the uneducated. At the time I believed him, and I think his advice had a lot to do with my decision to pursue a degree in physics. Somewhere along the way, however, in 1969, something happened (something many people are still trying to figure out) which drew me away from the spirit of that fatherly advice and subsequently my once promising career.  >>>

“Dharma means essential nature.
As heat is essential to fire, the dharma of all creation is to love.
We may not all love the same thing, but love we must.
Ultimately the eternal dharma of all beings beyond even life and death is to love God.”
