FC Augsburg

Augsburg has not had much success except at the strict amateur level. Founded in 1907 as FC Alemannia, in 1921 it became BC Augsburg, which it remained until 1969. For the most part, they played in the upper echelons of the southern Oberliga/2.Liga until the Bundesliga was founded in 1963. From then on, things started going downhill rapidly. In 1969, faced with collapse, BCA merged with the soccer division TSV 1847 Schwaben Augsburg to form the current club FC Augsburg. Success was mostly limited to the youth division, which won one national championship and several Cup titles in the early 1990s. Interestingly enough, Schwaben players had merged to to form FCA, but apparently a lot of the members weren't to thrilled. So in 1970 they reformed a soccer division and by 1998, the new Schwaben had made it back to the Oberliga!

A few famous players got their start at Augsburg: Helmut Haller, Bernd Schuster and Karl-Heinz Riedle.

The 1998-99 season was poor, with FCA struggling against relegation until the end. The next season was better, and despite poor performances. The goal of qualifying for the combined Regionalliga was achieved, but then the DFB denied the club a license, plunging them into the Bayernliga. However, their stay at the 4th division was short, and they went back up within 2 seasons.

From the Autobahn A8 (Munich-Stuttgart), take the "Augsburg-West exit. This puts you on the B17 highway, and take the "Stadion exit".
This stadium was built in 1951, and during the 50s was augmented by temporary stands, allowing larger crowds. The record attendance was 65,000 in 1952 for the Germany-Switzerland match, and the Rosenau has been the site of many international and club friendlies. The old BCA-Stadion has since been built over, had a capacity of around 18,000. Schwaben played in the Stadion Haunstetter-Straße, which was also built over.

Tickets Range from DM 25 for the "Tribune" to DM 12 for standing room.
Supporters Attendance usually around 2-3,000 (Regionalliga, 2002).
