SC Herford

A small club (soccer-wise) that might have been something.

The club was founded in 1972 when SuS Herford and Herforder SC merged. Things started moving upwards quickly, and by the late 1970s they were playing in the 2.Liga Nord. Although it was a constant relegation battle, they were among the elite of Westfalen clubs. However, by 1981, mediocrity had set in and they've been left behind by other Westfalen towns, such as Bielefeld, Ahlen, Gütersloh, Paderborn etc. By 2006, they were playing down int the 7th Division, which is pretty sad for a club that was once in the 2.Liga...

The original was built in 1936, holding about 1936. After WW-II it was used as a prisoner-of-war camp. It was in such bad shape that it was torn down in 1955 and a new stadium was built a few hundred yards away, holding 15,000. The locals declared it "the prettiest stadium between Dortmund and Hannover", a slap in the face to nearby Bielefeld. After some renovation in the 1960s, some decent crowds showed up in the 2.Liga days. However, with relegation tings started rapidly downhill. By 1998, it was now "the greatest ruin between Dortmund and Hannover", and was completely renovated. It's again considered very nice, although the soccer attendance is tiny. They did draw over 17,000 for the finals of "Spiel ohne Grenzen", which is basically a bunch of yokels in teams making idiots of themselves on obstacle courses.

Don't seem to care about the soccer club, since they don't even bother to have the scores or team lineup.
