Kilia Kiel Kilia Kiel This club has been a city institution for quite a while, but has never been ambitious, and remained mostly a local fixture.
Kilia was founded in 1902 by dissatisfied members of 1.Kieler FV (later Holstein Kiel), who withdrew and decided to roll their own. These were mostly young members who didn't like the way the oldtimers were running the club. They grew quickly, having some 300 members by 1912. (Today, it's about 420). In 1928 they were joined by the Kieler Fußballvereinigung, which was a union of several smaller Kiel clubs. In 1941, Kilia reached their highpoint, as they achieved promotion into the Gauliga Nordmark. They probably would have gotten relegated, but the league was split, and they were seeded into the Gauliga Schleswig-Holstein. They did manage to finish 2nd in the 1943-44 season.
After WW-II, they bounced around in the local regional amateur leagues. In 1964 they failed in the promotion playoffs for the new Regionalliga Nord, and really haven't been outside of Schleswig-Holstein since, with the exception of a single Oberliga season in 2001. Despite a reasonable finish (i.e. not getting relegated), the team voluntarily withdrew back to the Verbandsliga (2002).
