Stahl Riesa

A club from a medium sized town that suffered the fate of many eastern teams and went belly-up.

The soccer tradition in Riesa is fairly strong. In 1903, SC Riesa was founded, renamed to Riesaer SV two years later. Success was modest during the Weimar Republic years, but by the 1940s, RSV established itself in the relatively strong Gauliga Sachsen. Like all sports clubs, RSV was banned with the collapse of the Third Reich.

SG Riesa would be the successor to Riesaer SV, and was started in late 1945. In 1948, the club became affiliated with the steelworkers, eventually becoming BSG Stahl Riesa. This remained until almost the end of the GDR. After die Wende, there was about a decade when the club tried to claim it's pre-GDR past and played as Riesaer SV. This lasted until the new milenium, when it reverted to Stahl. However the decline of the region economically reflected itself in the collapse of club finances as well, and attendance levels that had been as high as 10,000 average (in 1975) dropped to around 1,000 by 2001. Despite attempts to stay afloat by essentially swallowing up other local clubs, Riesaer SV Blau-Weiß (1995) and SC Riesa-Röderau (the old Chemie Riesa, 1999), things went from bad to worse.

The club officially died June 30, 2003. The financial problems could not be overcome, and the club was wound up. Some of the players and coaches decided to remain, and members founded a new club Traditions SportVerein Stahl Riesa, which would start over in the 2. Kreisklasse (9th division).
