Neither of the clubs did much prior to the merger, although TSG appears to have been the stronger club, having played in the top flight regional league in the late 1950s and a couple of seasons in the Regionalliga. In 1970, they merged, after both had played in the Amateurliga. The combined forces made them one of the stronger regional clubs, and they finally made the breakthrough to the 2nd level in 1979. Uneven results followed until by the mid 1990s the team strengthened and made the breakthrough to the 2.Liga
1998-99 looked to be a grim fight against relegation. Ulm had the smallest budget of all 2.Liga clubs (DM 6.5 million) and only 5 players with any full professional experience. What happened was a sensation without precedent. Ulm got off to a quick start, and astounded by holding the lead tenaciously. Even when they began to slip, they stayed close to the top, and managed to achieve the impossible: 3rd place and promotion!!
The Bundesliga season was at least a partial success: The Ulmers stunned their opposition and put up a heroic fight, only to succumb on the last day of the season. The club had plenty of confidence in the following 2.Liga season, but it turned into the worst nightmare in Sparrows history: Ulm sucked unbelievably, and was relegated. To make matters worse, their finances were chaos, and they were forcibly dropped all the way to the 5th division (!!). The 2nd string squad carried out bravely, and even achieved 2nd place. When the 1st team returned to the Oberliga, they finshed strong, so we may yet see the Sparrows rise up from obscurity again...
