Würzburger FV

The club was founded in 1904 as 1. Würzburger FV 04., and in 1923 the soccer section was spun off independantly (in 1920 they had been joined by some worthless gymnasts). There really wasn't much success, as they generally played at the lower levels. After a short forced merger with local rival Kickers from 1943-44, the club started again after WW-II in the usual obscurity.

By the 1970s, WFV04 had established itself in the Bayernliga as a contender, and the club's ambitions were realized with the promotion to the 2.Bundesliga in 1976. WFV04 was actually in a playoff with Wacker München, which was lost 0-2. However, Wacker declined promotion, and WFV04 went up. The 2.Liga proved tough, but the club managed to stay up, but declining attendances (from 6,600 to 2,900) increased debt and pressure.

In May 1981, the bill came due, and with over 2.5 million marks in debt, 1.WFV04 was forced into bankruptcy. The stadium and all assets were sold, (the stadium to DJK) and members were forced to wind up the club. They founded a new club, Würzburger FV, which was seeded down in the Kreisklasse C. Nevertheless, over the years, WFV has been able to work it's way up again. Also, in a bit of irony, the new playing field was in fact originally the "DJK-Platz". By the 1990s, the club was back on the radar again. They made it back to the Landesliga, and had "the most important match in our recent history." This was a home DFB-Cup tie against Bundesligist 1860 München. 10,000 fans showed up and although WFV lost 10-0, it was nice to be back on the map. Today WFV bounces around in the upper levels of the Bayern regional leagues.

Until 1982, WFV played at the Frankfurter Straße, which was built in 1912 (Capacity 15,000, now around 8,000). When WFV went bankrupt in 1981, it was acquired by DJK Würzburg, and is now known as DJK-Stadion.
