A rather lame effort ended in a fair draw, as both teams subbed liberally. Coach Rudi Voeller brought on some newcomers, and none was more strange than Hertha BSC's Arno Friedrich: his top-flight Bundesliga career consists of all of two games.

After a catastrophic error by Freier, Berbatov put the Bulgars in the lead. Along with oldie Krasimir Balakov, the Leverkusen forward was constantly one of the better Bulgarians. But only a couple of minutes later, Michael Ballack converted a penalty after Klose was hauled down. The rest of the 1st half was a like watching grass grow. The 2nd half was more of the same.
