Match Report

ETB Schwarz-Weiss Essen - Wuppertaler SV 1:3 (0:2)

Oberliga Niederrhein, Round 18:
December 15, 2001
Easy win into winterbreak

A nice solid win for WSV to go into the winterbreak in 2nd place. WSV was forced to a slight change in plan, due to the Essen Uhlenkrug pitch being totally frosted over. But the Bergisch Lions were up to the task and easily brought things under control.

Markus Bayertz opened things up early, as his intended assist off a free kick floated into the net after only 5 minutes. About 10 minutes later, Thomas Euler put in a perfect cross, and Alex Kohout only had to stick his head out to knock it home. WSV was totally dominant, but then went into the locker room on a down note: Jean-Louis Tavarez got his 2nd yellow of the match for another silly foul, and WSV was short a man.

The Esseners tried to take full advantage, coming out strong in the 2nd half. Michael Moellensiep pulled a goal back off a nice header, coming off a corner from Christian Hoffmann. But that was the extent of the Black-White recovery. After that, they really never mounted much of a threat. Their attempts at long-ball tactics on the frozen tundra came to nothing. Instead it was WSV that missed several chances to put the game on (more) ice. Noel Kipre was wide open, but his shot was stopped by Miernik on a nice grab. Finally a low shot by Thomas Rietz ended the affair.
