A tough game for WSV. Based on the standings, one would have expected a WSV win, but given the nature of the derby, it probably shouldn't be considered too bad a result. Remscheid was obviously pumped up to knock off our guys, so avoiding a loss has to be looked upon favorably.
In "fighting spirit" and excitement the "bergisch derby" met all expectations. However in quality of play there was something left to be desired.

Remscheid had fully recovered from recent weak results, and even and the neighbors on the verge of defeat. The flat shot from playmaker Pietro Callea (77.) was seen by many of the 7,000 fans as in the goal. However, it only rattled against the post of the WSV goal

Also, Brindaitis' blast (9.) didn't miss by much. The guests only were dangerous in the start phase a couple of times in front of Stocki's goal. However Zilles (23.) and Goulet (24.) blew the opportunity.

The decisive factor in the game was the ability of Putz and Müller to shut down the feared Wuppertal offensive strengths of Simmes and Hartwig. As a result, the WSV attack was fairly lame. (based on "kicker" article of 9/23/96 )
