Citlali Sáenz listens as Miguel Gavilan Molina rehearses his spoken word presentation, which this evening is on the theme of Y2K and the recent end of the Mayan calendar. Molina says the full title of the radio show is "La Onda Radio del Barrio Aztlan."

At the control board, Music Director Chuy Varela shows Ventura "Mr. ChuChu" Longoria a CD cover picturing Emiliano Zapata. Varela mixes music tracks, live interviews, and spoken word presentations during the two hour commercial free broadcast. Longoria will present "la palabra," a one word idea for the evening.

Chuy Varela announces a forthcoming march for better schools organized by the Oakland, California community group ACORN. Members of the group are in the adjoining studio, and Varela interviews them live on the air, alternating between speaking English and Spanish.

Noted muralist Daniel Galvez, at right, is in the studio to promote a book for young people he has illustrated titled "It Doesn't Have To Be This Way: A Barrio Story." The bilingual book about a boy's encounter with gangs is a collaboration with author Luis J. Rodriguez published recently by Children's Book Press of San Francisco.

Artists Daniel Galvez and René Yañez prepare to talk on the air with Chuy Varela who is at the controls in the adjoining studio. Varela introduces them as "two barrio warriors who've been out there doing it with art."

Citlali Sáenz and Mr. ChuChu stand by in the studio during the broadcast.

Varela answers the phone to give a listener free tickets to a concert by the group Los Otros.

Miguel Gavilan Molina ends the evening's broadcast and his spoken word presentation by stating "Peace begins with respect."
