Adi  Granth

The Guru Granth Sahib (also known as the Adi Granth) is truely unique among the world's great scriptures. It is considered the Supreme Spiritual Authority and Head of the Sikh religion, rather than any living person. It is also the only scripture of it's kind which not only contains the works of it's own religious founders but also writings of people from other faiths. The living Guru of the Sikhs, the book is held in great reverence by Sikhs and treated with the utmost respect. Sikhism rejects idol worship, so the Guru Granth Sahib is not worshipped as an idol, but rather emphasis is placed on respect of the book for the writings which appear within. Guru Granth Sahib is a collection of devotional hymns and poetry which proclaims God, lays stress on meditation on the True Guru (God), and lays down moral and ethical rules for development of the soul, spiritual salvation and unity with God.

By whom with one mind the name is meditated upon,
having reflected by means of the instruction of the Guru.
Their faces are always bright in that true court.
Those always, always drink nectar,
who are attached to the true name.

O brother, to the disciple honor will always be given!
If Hari, Hari is always meditated upon,
he washes off the filth of egotism.
The fleshly-minded do not know the name,
without the name honour is lost.
They have not tasted the relish of the name,
    they cling to another love.
Worms of ordure fall upon ordure,
    they are absorbed in ordure.
His human birth is fruitful,
who walks in the love of the true Guru.
He saves his own family,
blessed is the mother who has given birth to him.
The name of Hari, Hari is meditated upon,
upon whom he bestows his mercy and pleasure.
By which disciples the name is meditated upon,
having removed from within their own self.
Those are pure from inside and outside,
the true ones are absorbed in the True one.
Those have become acceptable,
who meditate upon Hari by the instruction of the Guru.
