You know that we are constantly being torn between two false
dragons, one of which is the past and the other the future. Very
few are fortunate enough to rest their oars and devote their
wholehearted attention to the problems that face them in the
living present. The majority of people are obsessed either with
irretrievable happenings in the past or imaginary fears ahead in
the unknown future.

Both these occupations, you will admit, are useless and a sheer
waste of time. The past is dead and buried; and repentance,
though good in itself, cannot cure or undo it, while the future
is chiefly based upon the reactions of the past Karmas and is
affected to a great extent by what we are doing in the living
present. So, if we take care to live an honorable and honest
life in the living present, abiding by the Holy Commandments
of the sages and seers, there should be little to worry about
for the past and nothing to become anxious about for the future.

We must, therefore, pay proper heed to the sowing and not to
the harvesting, for the harvest will come of its own from the
seeds sown. Guru Nanak has beautifully said: "It may be all
very well to worry about events contrary to the Divine Plan,
but what is destined will happen in spite of us." Learn the
sacred technique of doing one thing at a time, with one-
pointed, wholehearted and undivided attention. In this way
you will accomplish much more in less time and with far less
effort. So the Master tells us that all we need to care about
is our spiritual perfection, and to take the routine round of
the fated Karmas as exactly what we need for soul eman-
cipation. In this way we will cultivate a state of perpetual
contentment which will be helpful in holy meditations.

Re:  The Spiritual Practice of Naam

Truth never gets old nor rusty
                                                GURU AMAR DAS

It is so natural and so easy that one can take to it as a
matter of routine. It involves no intricacies and mysterious
practices  and  one  can  safely go ahead on the path with
ease and comfort. It is a Grand Trunk Road to God. One
may  with  a  little  labor  gather  a  rich harvest. What the
Rishis  of  old  achieved  with  much labor extending over
centuries can now  be gained easily with sincere devotion
from day to day,  without  any physical penances of tortu-
ous practices.

To start with one has to take care to devote time regu-
larly at fixed hours in some solitary place.  But as soon as
inner experience becomes a regular feature with the aspir-
ant, then all restrictions as to time  and place drop off and
one  can hear  the Divine Symphony  all day long,  even in
the  midst  of  most  strenuous work, without any effort on
his part.

Sleeping or awake, sitting or standing, Kabir remains
              ever at his post within.

God's Will  is indescribable  and the  question arises - how
may  we  become  one  with  it?   Guru  Nanak replies that the
best  we  can  do  is  to sit  in  meditation  at  the early hour of
dawn  and  commune  with His Holy Word.   Our actions and
our efforts count no doubt - it is through them that we achieve
human birth - but, says Nanak,  we cannot earn salvation, for
it must  come as the gift  of His Grace.  Guru  Nanak,   in  the
Jap Ji,   turns  time  and  again  to this paradox, that  salvation
is  only  possible  through  His Grace,   yet  we  need effort to
achieve this salvation.

The whole of creation came into being through the Naam and is
ever sustained by It.

    All this world you see is the Lord's image;
    The Lord's image becomes apparent.

Make the Naam your companion. The Lord is All-Consciousness,
and  the  soul  is  consciousness  also,  which when connected, be-
comes  more  conscious.   Instead  of  this  happening,   it  became
connected  and  enmeshed  with  the  lower  expressions of matter,
thereby getting affected by  all the impure things of life in this world.
When consciousness  diminishes,  what  happens?  After death, the
soul goes to whatever level of consciousness it has at that time. So,
now  you  have  the great blessing of the human form; go and open
your heart to a True Master-show Him your condition, and do not
hide anything  . We should receive the Bread of Life which is food
for the soul. Food for the body is through eating and drinking, and
food for the intellect is through reading, writing, and thinking.   But,
with awakenedness one learns to discriminate Truth from all untruth.

Naam is the  Bread  and  Water of Life,  the food for the soul - the
cure for all ills, be they physical, mental, or mind ramifications.  The
soul  is  weak  because  we have not fed it.  We only talk about the
soul,  but  mere talking will not feed it. Can the stomach be filled by
discussing various kinds of bread?   If you are thirsty, will repeating
the  word  "water"  in  all  the world's languages quench your thirst?
This  Bread and Water  of  Life  cannot  be got from those who are
materially  prosperous,  or those  who will give you money, or from
intellectuals  who  offer their vast halls of learning. Food for the soul
can be  given  only  by  a  God-Realized Person, and where does it
come from?

I am that Bread of Life ....this is the Bread which cometh down
from heaven; whosoever partaketh of it will have everlasting life.

It is a wealth of Truth, obtainable from the True Emperor, not from
worldly people.

                    Acceptance of Prayers

It is a common experience that most of our prayers
get  no  response.  The  reason  for  this  is  not  hard to
find.  We  have  not  yet learnt the Will of God and how
that Will works entirely for our benefit. In our ignorance
we  very  often  pray  for  things  that  in the long run are
likely  to  do more harm than good,  and no wonder that
the  loving  Father  in  His  boundless  compassion for us
does  not  accept  such prayers and they bear no fruit, or
else  we  would  never  be  able  to  escape from sensual
enjoyments.

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss
that ye may consume it upon your lusts.

                                                            JESUS
Again:

    We ignorant of ourselves,
Beg often our own harms, which the wise
        powers
Deny us for our good: so find we profit
    By losing of our prayers.
                                                        SHAKESPEARE

George Meredith tells us to remember,

That he who rises from prayer a better man,
        his prayer alone is answered.

Again, we generally pray to God for miracles and no
wonder such prayers are not granted.

Whatever a man prays for, he prays for a
        miracle.
Every prayer reduces itself to this: "Great
God, grant that twice two be not four."

                    MASTER AND HIS WORK

MASTER is like a wish-yielding tree. He always grants
the wishes, whatever they are, of the seekers. The rich
and the poor, the high and the low: everyone comes to
him for something. His greatest pleasure, however, lies
in liberating spirits from the clutches of body and mind.
Irrespective of his denominational character, he attends
to the spiritual needs of all.

He neither creates new "isms" nor does he denounce
the "isms" in existence. He comes not to break the law,
but to fulfill the law. All "isms" (spiritual), in fact, receive
strength and solidarity from him.

In his inimitable loving way, he takes everyone from the
line of least resistance. He does not interfere with the
creeds and beliefs of a person, whatever these are,
nor does he meddle with the social order of things. He
simply talks of the spirit, its intrinsic nature, its seat in
the body, its various operative processes, its latent
capabilities, and how it can be developed in its
relation with body, mind, and with God, and how it
can be liberated, made self-poised and turned
Godward.
