Backwater-to five miles out, inshore-to twelve miles out, offshore
November clocks fall back but the fishing goes forward.November has traditionally been
one of the hottest months of the year to fish. If history repeats itself watch out for
large line stretching grouper in shallow water. This good shallow water fishing should
last from November till after Christmas. On recent trips we have boated grouper in as
little as eight feet of water to sixty feet of water.
At this time of year the only thing
that harms the fishing is the weather. Trolling is only good in the deeper water when you
get out of the floating grass. I have been loading up on the grouper fishing frozen baits
in the stained waters and on pin fish in the clear water. If you want to increase your
catches try using buck tails on spinning equipment. Along with the grouper we have been
also catching snapper, trigger fish and some nice sea bass. The white grunts are very
big at this time of the year and believe me those that eat fish will always take a mess of
white grunts home for a meal. The king mackerel have been following the bait schools and
if your going out for offshore fishing you will see the schools of bait everywhere. I
have found that the bait is bunched up around the floating grass. Trolling is about
impossible.
I have been catching the mackerel either on the bottom while fishing for
grouper or floating a Cajun Thunder with about six foot of mono leader tied to Tyger
Leader then a circle hook tied to that. The new Tyger Leader is plastic coated stainless
leader which you can tie a knot in or use a lighter to melt it together. A word of advice
always use a wire leader of some kind while fishing for mackerel, yes you can catch a
mackerel without a leader, your chances are surly increased in catching a mackerel with a
wire leader attached to your line.
Keep a tight line till next time.
