About cosmos
Native to Mexico, cosmos are a great summer flower for areas with poor soil and heat. They bloom
during summer and fall and when grown at the back of a border in mass, they make a showy display
with their daisy-like flowers. They are a favorite of mine because they require little care and they look
so pretty as they sway in a gentle summer breeze. They also attract butterflies.
Varieties and colors
Heights range from 2 1/2 to 8 feet and the most common colors are white, burgandy, lavendar,
orange, purple, and yellow.
Planting and care
Cosmos grow easily from seed and should be planted after all all danger of frost has passed. Avoid
soil that is too rich and grow in a spot that gets full sun. To encourage bushiness, pinch the growing
tips when the plants are about 12 inches tall.
Uses
Cosmos look great as a backdrop for shorter plants and are also good for cutting. After cutting, put
them immediately into some cool water.
