Lots of photos, easy to read, and a must for every gardener. This popular reference book has been
around for 40 years. Broken down into the 24 climate zones in the Western states, it is a favorite of mine.

A gardening columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle,Katherines book covers native and
non-native species, regional history, advice on organic gardening, basic planting techniques, and
pruning techniques.
Annuals: 1001 Gardening questions answered. By the editors of Garden Way Publishing.
Has practical advice and ideas on all sorts of annuals. They also publish a book on Herbs and Perrenials
that has the same Q and A format.
Roses. By Sunset Publishing
Has tips on planting and care, pruning, landscaping ideas and features information and photos on
350 popular varieties of roses.
The Rose Bible by Rayford Clayton Reddell.
Loaded with advice and beautiful color photographs. Includes a section on what Reddell refers to
as the "Fifty Immortal Roses."
Rodales Encyclopedia of Perrenials. Ellen Phillips and C. Colston Burrell.
Tips on buying, planting, using perrenials in the garden. Also contains a gallery of garden designs
and a throrough index of the most common perrenials. Excellent reference with lots of nice
color photos.
Magazines
Sunset Magazine.
The magazine of western living celebrates 100 years this year. The monthly section on gardening is
informative and I have clipped out several articles over the years that I have used as a reference when

Herb Companion
If you enjoy herb gardening and appreciate a well-designed magazine with beautiufl artwork and
interesting articles, try the Herb Companion. It is full of advice and articles on growing herbs and
each issue has recipes for using herbs in the kitchen.
