The Creek Club started as a class project and grew into a year round activity. Students have identified various species inhabiting the waters and landforms, cleaned and maintained an otherwise forgotten creek. The City of Santa Rosa has given numerous awards to this program. The State of California has honored the Creek Restoration Project as an award winning program.
The Garden Club has won local awards. Students plan, plant and harvest crops in a small area on the edge of campus. They maintain a green house, pond and garden. Once harvested the students prepare then enjoy the fruits of their labor. Students from the local Junior College assist in the running of this program.
A unique class which allows students to foster pride in the school. Students are responsible for planting and maintaining the school grounds. The campus always looks great thanks to this class.
The Interact Club is sponsored by a local Rotary Club. Students learn actual business meeting protocol. The club has built earthquake preparedness kits for every classroom on campus.
Science students are working with the California Academy of Science on this study. Students spend hours each week regardless of the weather counting and tagging newts. Newts secrete a poisonous substance which the students must take care in not getting on themselves. They work in teams in various locations within the ranch. Newt population changes frequently therefore some days there are a lot of newts to count and sometimes there are only a few.
Ridgway High School sponsors tournments for boys and girls in Basketball, Softball and volleyball each year.
RHS students tutor at local elementary schools in two different specific areas. One program places bilingual tutors in classrooms to help students with reading. Many of our students are bilingual (the majority of these are Spanish speaking) and their skills are put to good use in classrooms with non-English speaking students. The second program, Joint Ventures, is made up of students who are familiar with the FOSS (Full-Option-Science-System)Science kits. Students tutor elementary children in Foss Science. Elementary Teachers have applauded our tutors for their caring thorough and knowledgable tutoring expertise.
