Text Box: Creating water abundance First, reducing our consumption of groundwater is the key to shifting toward a more sustainable balance with our local water resources. We conserve our water resources by utilizing rainwater, recycling graywater, using low-flow appliances, and by designing integrated systems that maximize supply and reduce demand. One inch of rain on a 1000 sq. ft. roof provides approximately 620 gallons of harvested rainwater. Here in the County of Sonoma where the average rainfall is 42 inches annually, a 2000 square foot roof could potentially harvest more than 52,000 gallons; that’s enough to satisfy 50% of the water usage needs of a family of four. Hence, harvesting the rain from your roof and installing a graywater system can significantly cut rising water and energy costs. Currently we drain our communities by diverting rainwater away from rather than infiltrating it into our landscapes, waterways and aquifers. Impervious surfaces like asphalt and concrete directs rainwater to streets and storm drains contributing to downstream flooding and contamination. In the U.S., non-point source pollution accounts for more than 60% of all surface-water pollution.
