THE LOW GEAR
Many "singlespeeds" actually have another freewheel cog that the chain can be manually changed to, depending on conditions. The resulting gear can make hill climbing a little easier, but not much.
Some hills are just too long and steep for me; a three thousand foot climb is just no fun on any grade over about 6 or 7%. So I figured out a way to drop the gear substantially, from a 71" gear to a 48". I can climb almost any hill in a 48" gear.
You can see a reversed derailleur cage under the rear brake. I need to put the gear on the smaller inner chainring, and thread it through the jockey wheels so the slack is taken up. The chain has just enough slack to allow me to derail it by pushing it sideways at the big chainring, and rotating the cranks backwards.
Here is how it looks when it's done (it takes about 30 seconds). I don't like to do it unless really necessary, because I have to stop riding, and it gets my fingers dirty.  The derailleur cage comes from the accessories provided with the Rohloff hub, and is designed to take up chain slack (not to shift gears). But any derailleur cage could be adapted for this kink of use.
