Oxalis

1989

20 x 28"

This is a sorrel patch at my parents' house – they have a quite luxuriant area of it in their front yard. We loved it as kids because it has a delightful sour taste, particularly the stems. Later in life I learned that the sour flavor is from oxalic acid, which has a dubious health reputation (perhaps not deserved) by association with rhubarb leaves. We ate handfuls of this stuff and we're all still around, but I think it does cause calcium absorption problems. For all I know it prevents scurvy.

I like the layered depth of this scene.
