Drying Mud

1990 20 x 28" From a trip to a dry lake in the Mojave Desert. The surface of the lakebed is as hard as asphalt until inundated by rains, following which it softens and becomes susceptible to damage by weekend warriors. One rut created this way had filled in with a thick layer of silt from subsequent storms. This silt layer then dried, cracked, and peeled up in the intense desert heat. I found it at sunset and photographed it as the shadows lengthened. The rut runs from lower left to upper right. Collection of the artist Giclee prints available: image sizes are: 18 x 25 1/4" (90%) and 10 x 14" (50%) |
