Mushrooms on Douglas Fir Log

10 9/16 x 15 1/16" 1997 On a rainy hike in 1994, I visited a Douglas fir that had died and fallen across a ravine. The stump end had this community of Sulfur Tuft mushrooms growing from the crevices in the bark. I discovered on future visits that the community came and went in just a week or two, and only saw it once more in the years that followed. The tree has now rotted so much that the bark fell off,and thus it can no longer sustain the mushrooms. I painted this as a wedding gift for friends in New Mexico. Giclee prints available: image size is 10.6 x 15.1" (100%)
