California poppies dot our roadsides and hillsides, sometimes carpeting entire valleys. I love their yellow and orange color combination, which gives them a luminous fluorescence. I appreciate their simplicity – just four petals arranged about a clump of anthers. Lastly, I love the way they show up without pretense, in cheerful bursts by a road or in the middle of a grassy slope.

This particular poppy was next to our driveway, and had opened up just enough to bathe the anthers in the sunlight reflected off the petals. The anthers were about ready to burst with pollen, and the edge of the petal in the foreground had a beautiful sinuosity to it.
