Polly Barclay

A sensational murder trial also captivated the population in 1806. The
previous autumn Polly Barclay's husband had been murdered in Wilkes
County. The beautiful widow was then charged as conspirator in the
crime, found guilty, and sentenced to be hanged. On Friday the 13th of
May, 1806, she was placed on a gallows just west of downtown
Washington where she gave her life, the first white woman hanged in
Georgia.
