Linda Lyon, Alabama

Sentenced to death on Dec 21, 1994 for the murder of a white police
officer (38) on Oct 4, 1993 in Opelika, Lee County Linda Lyon and
George Sibley were charged with aggravated battery on a person older
than 65 (Lyon's husband Karl Block, 80). Since Lyon and Sibley were
"sovereign citizens" (antigovernment extremists who basically don't
believe that federal or most state laws apply to them) they did not
show up for their court date but fled with Lyon's son Gordon aged 9.

For a while, they remained out of sight and sound. On Oct 4, 1993 they
surfaced in the small town of Opelika. While Lyon phoned a woman passed
by Sibley's car and saw Gordon mouth the words "Help me" to her. She
looked around and saw a police officer's vehicle. The woman went to
Sergeant Roger Motley and told him what she had seen.

Motley walked towards the Mustang and asked Sibley for his drivers
license. Sibley informed Motley that he had "no contracts with the
state". When Motley touched his holstered gun, Sibley took his own
weapon and fired at the policeman. Since Motley had not expected a
gunfight he tried to run back towards his car and call for assistance
or perhaps to flee.

When Lyon realized what was going on, she dropped the phone and ran
towards Motley, who was unaware of her presence or approach. When she
reached him, she pulled out a gun and shot at him several times,
hitting him in the chest as he turned around to face her.

The couple fled as the fatally wounded Moptley crawled into his police
cruiser and radioed for help. Motley died shortly after from the chest
wounds.

Both Lyon and Sibley were arrested soon after and sentenced to death.
