This experiment measures a 64 foot length of SWTL AWG #28 wire, fixtured using the original QEX launchers. It provides a reference measurement and also two measurements made when additional AWG28 and AWG18 conductors were attached at 24’ and allowed to slope down to wet sod where they ran for >30 feet to act as terminations. The change in attenuation can be observed and compared for the two additional wire sizes in Figure 2.
For this measurement calibration was performed with 50 ohm calibration standards at the end of the test cables which attached to the launchers. Thus the attenuation of the launchers along with the SWTL itself is included in all measurements.
Beginning at a point 24’ from each end, an additional conductor has been added which gently sloped downward and laid on wet grass. Figure1 shows this configuration and a schematic representation of it.
Both AWG28 and AWG18 conductors were added allowing measurement of both equal and different conductor diameters.
Figure 2 shows the compares the results with the original SWTL having no additional conductor.
