Experiment 15

Experiment-SWTL-Foam

This experiment measures a 64 foot length of SWTL AWG #28 wire, fixtured using the original QEX launchers. It provides a reference measurement which can be compared to another measurement made when a 55” length of styrofoam is inserted at the 40’ point. The conductor lies within a notch in the styrofoam so becomes surrounded by it on three sides. This is a straight section of foam surrounding the conductor and the measurement is meant to assess the degree of impact that the foam has on measurement, pending bends being added in a later experiment.

The change in attenuation can be observed and compared in Figure 2

For this measurement calibration was performed with 50 ohm calibration standards at the end of the test cables which attached to the launchers. Thus the attenuation of the launchers along with the SWTL itself is included in all measurements.
