Pizza at Tino's. Norm Anderson's tailgate party, the Oregon-Utah football game ( Go Ducks ), and lunch at the Red Lion -- How can you top that for the "first in a long time reunion of the U.of O. Phi Kaps."
After a year in planning, the event took place on the first weekend in September ( 7-9 ) and brothers ( and spouses and friends ) from classes of 1958 through 1964 were in attendance.
Holding forth for pizza for Friday night were ( in class seniority ): Vern Ummel '58, Mick Murray '60, Larry Perry '60, Dave Rianda '60, Paul Turner '60, Dean Barr '61, Ed Nelson '61, Darrel Overbeck '61, Lael Prock '63, John Rowell '63, Dave Yee '63 and Norm Anderson '64. The group partied until Tino's "encouraged" us to move on. Preceding the dinner, a few of the brothers assembled at the old house on Alder and 19th to participate in the initiation of brother Norm Anderson. Alpha Paul Turner presided - with skull and all. It was a suprise for Norm. Appropriate respects were paid to our cook Lela -- the kitchen hasn't changed. The house is now occupied by the Delta Upsilon fraternity. Saturday saw the addition of a few other Phi Kaps: Dick Stone '62, Russ Andersen '63 and Terry Taylor '64. We all joined Norm's tailgater -- a big event at Duck games. We cheered the Ducks on to its second win for the season! At our ages, too tired to do anything Saturday evening, we all looked forward to a luncheon at the Red Lion on Coburg Road on Sunday. Joining us at that event were the widow and daughter of brother Rich Burton '60 ( Gayl Hauzenberger, Holly Brenner )
With spouses and all we totaled nearly 30 folks at the various gatherings -- unanimously called a success with plans to do it again in a couple of years.
Leading up to the event, Dave Rianda and Paul Turner, reunion organizers, heard from a lot of our other brothers who had "high hopes" of attending, including: Sandy Milkes '57, Pat Stack '59, Gordon Bertelson '60, Nick Steffanoff '60, Pete Apo '61, Bill Hogan '61, Dave Finney '62, Chuck Saunders '62, Steve Thomason '62, Charlie Niles '64 Dick Ednie '63.
Credit for the success of the reunion goes to Mick Murray and Lael Prock for helping to organize the event, but we think the real praise goes to Carol Turner, behind the scenes. Our thanks to brothers Overbeck, Prock, Rianda and Ummel for sending us the pictures of the weekend activities. It was great seeing everyone -- so with that in mind, rally now, bros to the call for another reunion. We'll be in touch for sure.
