Hearing on Koch-Carmichael Property

Last fall, a decision was made by the Santa Cruz County Planning Commission to deny the request of the property owners to build a large home in a sensitive area of the property, which would have blocked access to the "Scout Trail" linking the property to Nisene Marks State Park.

The property owners have appealed this decision. On Tuesday, 5 April 2005, at 9 AM, there will be a hearing of the County Board of Supervisors regarding an appeal by the property owners. The hearing will be held in the Supervisor's Chambers on the 5th floor of the County Building at 701 Ocean Street.

Please fax your county Supervisor at (831) 454-3262 or send an email - for your supervisor's email address, see

Nisene to Sea and Koch Property

On Thursday, 6 March 2003, I took some pictures of the upper part of the Koch property above Cabrillo College, in Aptos. From the Vienna Woods subdivision, I walked up a trail to the top of "Cadillac Hill", which is next to part of the boundary of this property with Nisene Marks State Park. Pictures 9, 10, and 11 were taken from a clearing which is near at the park boundary sign, looking down towards Cabrillo College and also into the park. I noted that the hillside between this clearing and the lower part of the trail is very steep, and it would be very difficult to build a trail bypassing the hillcrest site where the owner proposes to build a large home.

For information regarding immediate issues about this property, contact the Nisene 2 Sea Open Space Alliance. There will be a public hearing later this month on this issue.

The next day I walked into the Koch property from the new Cabrillo College Norticulture Center. The last ten pictures were taken on that walk. At one point, I walked into the oak forest next to the trail. There are some redwood groves among the oaks.
