Twelfth Generation

2288. James McCulloch Esq. of Grogan1139,1783 died on 5 February 1724/5 in Ireland, County Antrim, Randalstown District, Barony of Toome.1784,1785 He had his estate probated in 1725 in Ireland, County Antrim, Randalstown District, Barony of Toome.1784 Our current understanding is that James was the eldest or possibly second son of William McCulloch of Randalstown died 1682, will probated 2 Apr 1682.

"of Grogan" Groggan is a small village, more like a crossroads, about 4-5 miles northwest of Randalstown in Drumaull Parish, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The map of Groggan Co., Antrim shows Groggan near the left hand edge, Drummaul near the left center top, and Randalstown is the shaded town area indicating a larger town at the left of center on the bottom edge.
Another possibilty is "Gortgarn" or "Gortagharn", both townlands in County Antrrim, Randalstown district of the Upper Toome Barony. Any of these would coincide with his father's residence in the Randalstown area. There is a probate record for a James McCullock, 1725, baroney of Tome, co. Antrim, gent., which could fit this man. In addition, there is a probate record for Henry McCulloch Esq whose will was probated in Fewghoge, County Antrim in 1728. This could fit James brother, the townland of Feehogue is also in Randalstown district, Co. Antrium, Upper Toome Barony.

Notes for JAMES MCCULLOCH:
James Iredell's genealogy of the McCulloch family states: James [McCulloch] of Grogan the last mentioned of that name in the foregoing genealogy had among other children, the three following – William, James, Henry – & a Daughter married to Charles Macartney of Dublin Esq. . . . [A brother of Eleanor Macartney, wife of Rev W Francis Iredell] Charles, a Merchant in Dublin who married a Daughter of James McCulloch of Grogun Esq. . . . James McCulloch of Grogan Esq. had among many other children by a first wife, a daughter married to Henry McCulloch, a Scotsman, who had issue Alexander McCulloch of Halifax County in N. Carolina Esq -- & who is first cousin by the half blood to James [&] William McCulloch in Ireland, Wm. [Francis] Iredell, & Henry Eustace McCulloch the only surviving child of Henry McCulloch Esq, the Brother of William & James[;] & Wm MaCartney, by the whole blood. The last statement that Alexander McCulloch is a "whole blood" first cousin of William Macartney implies that William Macartney is the son of Charles Macartney (only person named as husband of a daughter of James of Grogan except for Alexander's father) and that his mother, like the mother of Alexander, must have been a daughter of James of Grogan's first wife. Jane "Jennet" Houston and James McCulloch Esq. of Grogan were married about 1700.1785 2nd wife

2289. Jane "Jennet" Houston was born (date unknown).

_______________________________
“Survivor of them and his heirs” James Stewart and Charles Macartney are appointed trustees for the estate, however should one of them die the survivor is to act as trustee, and if survivor to the two trustees dies, then his heirs would act as trustee.
Charles Macartney is the brother-in-law of James McCulloh married to James’ half sister.
William McCulloh is the son of James McCulloh’s brother William McCulloh
Note that the nephew William McCulloh receives the property of the estate “in trust”. He and his heirs possess the property forever, but only so long as he or they provide for the widow Mary Ferguson McCulloh and pay the amounts of the legacies bequeathed to the other heirs.
“pounds Ster” means “pounds Sterling”.
“p ann” means “per annum” or annually.
“in Lieu Barr and full Recompence” is a term found in some wills. It is often stated as “in Lieu Barr and full satisfaction” or “in Lieu and full satisfaction”. It appears to mean “in place of going to court and in full payment or discharge of some obligation” for instance, in this case, the widow’s dower of one third of the estate.
James McCulloh of Piedmont is also a nephew, the son of the deceased’s brother William and the older brother of the nephew William McCulloh mentioned in the will.
“Gent” abbreviation for “Gentleman”
He died on 13 May 1745 at the age of 45 in Ireland, Dublin.1785,1786

William McCulloh of Piedmont1785,1786,1787 was born before 1700. He died in 1743 at the age of 43 in Ireland, County Antrim, Piedmont.1785 He had his estate probated in 1743 in Ireland, County Antrim, Piedmont.1784 He was also known as William McCulloh of Piedmount, William McCulloch of Camoley, Co Armagh on 19 Jun 1736 in Ballysavage, Antrim, Ulster, Ireland. He died 1743 in Piedmont, Antrim, Ulster, Ireland

William McCullock of Piedmont, will probated in 1743, is the brother of James McCulloh and Old Henry, all sons of James McCulloch of Grogan by his second wife. From references to him in other wills abstracted in the Registry of Deeds and Wills for Dublin, his death is estimated as between 1736, when he was named as a trustee in the will of James Crawfuird (Crawford) and 1745 when his eldest son was mentioned as James McCulloh of Piedmont in the will of William's brother, James McCulloh. William McCulloch of Piedmont was also listed as trustee in the 1728 will of John Shaw.

Locating the probate of the will for William of Piedmont confirms that he died prior to the death of his brother James, which accounts for his son James being known as James of Piedmont in his uncle's will.
