376. Philip
F. JONES88,662 was born about 1753 in Wales.662,866 He died
in USA, Kentucky, Edmondson Co..662
"The Jones family originated in Wales. Just before the Revolutionary War,
Phillip Jones and his younger brother, James came to America and were in South
Carolina. Phillip enlisted in the Continental Army early in the war and served
until the close. James favored the British cause and enlisted in that army.
Shortly, however, he quietly withdrew (or deserted) and entered the Continental
Army where he served until the end of the war. Both Phillip and James returned
to Greenwood, South Carolina and married there. Both brought their families
to the Green River County, (now Edmonson county) Kentucky, about 1800. Many of
the descendants of James Jones still reside in that area.
Phillip Jones had married Nancy Webb in South Carolina. They had five sons and
three daughter: Jesse, Phillip, Martin, John, James, Mary, Sarah, and a daughter
that married George Woolsey. ' (from The Barrens... by Emery White)
(The following is from Pat Lundy's research)
Philip Jones is first found in Tennessee according to his oldest son's 1850 census
record, which would mean that they were among the earliest settlers there. Jesse's
birth occurred two years after the beginning of the Revolutionary War (1776-1783).
By 1783-1788 Philip was living in Virginia. Then the family moved to Pendleton
District, now Pickens County, South Carolina by 1790. They then moved to Warren
County, Kentucky by 1797 and then to Edmonson County, Kentucky before 1813. Their
son John Jones was a young man when they moved to Edmonson County and he married
Eleanor there in 1813 although marriages are listed in Warren County.
Philip F. Jones was born about 1753 in Wales [LDS Compact Disc#18 Pin#314395];
died in Edmonson County, Kentucky. He married Nancy Webb about 1778. Nancy
was the daughter of Martin Webb and sister to Merry Webb who married Mary Garrison
after the death of her husband (Winnie Whittaker/USGenforum). Mary Garrison is
the mother of the wives of Martin and John Jones and widow of Salisbury Garrison
of Pendleton District, South Carolina. (Winnie Whittaker@webtv.net). A brother,
Salsbury Garrison, is listed in the 1825 Edmonson County, Tax List.
Norman Warnell, an Edmonson Co. historian <Normanlw@aol.com>,
wrote the following comments:
I cannot find anywhere that our Philip Jones was in the Revolutionary War. I
can find numerous Philip Jones' but not ours, so I am doubting that he was a
veteran of that war. In 1799, Aug. 9, in Warren Co. (now Edmonson ) south of
G. River, Philip Jones was assigned a 200 ac. tract of land by John Phelps (Nancy
Webb's brother. this is the wife of Martin Webb). Thomas Jones and Philip Jones
were chain carriers for the surveyor. This land was on the south side of G. River
someplace above Brownsville. On Nov. 18, 1820, Philip Jones, Sr. of Grayson Co.
(this was actually the part that became Edmonson Co. in 1825, north of G. River)
sold to Martin H. Webb this same tract of land on the south side of G. River.
The calls, etc. are the same.
What puzzles me is that Philip's wife is not mentioned on the deed and that was
required if a man had a wife which leads me to think she might have been dead.
But in checking the 1820 Grayson Co. Census I find Philip Jones, Sr. age 45+
and a female about the same age.
Also in Warren Co. 11-5-1802, one Philip Jones appointed a Simmons man power
of attorney to recover slaves, etc. on his property, etc.; in Charlotte Co.,
Va. I'm wondering if we aren't dealing with two Philip Jones;' here. This don't
sound like the one who came to Ed. Co.
Another thing that has me puzzled on Philip's children. There was supposed to
have been a daughter who married George Woolsey. Now, the only George Woolsey
that I know of was the one who lived in Dilema Valley and his wife was a Hopkins,
not a Jones. I'm beginning to believe that part of the Jones History is not correct.
Another thing I found was Charles Stice's will in Warren co. in 1801 was proved
by the oaths of William Phelps (this would be Nancy Webb's brother....her father
was also named William) and Philip Jones.
