176. Samuel ENGLISH417,638 was born about 1772 in USA, Pennsylvania.417,639 He appeared in the census in 1830 in USA, Tennessee, Claiborne Co..640,641

He died of cholera about 1832. died on the way to Missouri of cholera. Jack English writes "I'm in the mountains of North Carolina on the border with Tennessee. My ggg grandfather, Henry English who settled here was born in Cumberland County, Pa. in 1773. He had a brother named Samuel I'm told. He moved on into Tennessee. If Sam and Henry were brothers, their father was Robert English and their mother was Sarah Jane Crooks."

Samuel English b. abt 1780 probably VA d. 1832 married abt 1802 Mary/Polly Mullins b. TN and had the following children: Robert, William, Samuel, Wiley, Charles, Elizabeth, Jane b. 1813 Claiborne Co., TN, Polly, John, Nancy and Roseanna.
Family story says Samuel was the son of Samuel who fought in the 15th VA Regt during Rev. War.

(From Leona (Hopper) Newbill's manuscript -)
Samuel English was probably born about 1780, as he was said to be about 50 years of age at the time of his death in 1832. (According to father (I believe this to be Leona's father), "Samuel English was born in England about 1730 and came over about 1750, and settled in Tennessee. This was probably his father or grandfather). He married Mary/Polly Mullins in Tennessee, where she was born. She was the sister of Nancy Mullins, wife of Jasper Hopper. Her mother is said to have been born in Tennessee.

They lived in a large log cabin in Claiborne Co., Tenn. Grandmother spoke of the beautiful white floors and the beds with lace drapes.

Samuel had gone to Missouri and secured land for a new home, as Polly's sister, Nancy Hopper, was already living in Missouri. Before they could get started, the great cholera epidemic was on and thousands were dying. Samuel and Polly started to fee to their new home, but Samuel and four of the younger children, Polly, John, Nancy and Rosanna were stricken on the way and were bured near where they died. The others rushing on to their destination. Mary/Polly Mullins English died in Buchanan Co., MO. in 1849.

There were eleven children, six boys and five girls:

William, Samuel, Charles, Elizabeth and Jane, all crossd the plains to California in the Gold Rush, or soon after.

Research by Debbie Pirie
... searched the census index books looking for Samuel, the father. I only found him on the 1830 Claiborne County Tennessee census along with his sons, Robert and Charles who were married and listed as head of households. The number children listed for Samuel on the census matches the number of children listed in the manuscript I have from Leona Hopper Newbill if you include Robert and Charles. I also searched surrounding states and found no Samuel English's in North Carolina, Kentucky and one in Virginia.

Wiley, son of Samuel stayed in Missouri/Kansas as Leona said. He was living in Kansas in 1870. Wylie/Wiley (there are many spellings of this name) made a large amount of money for that time. He was business savvy and appears in many land records. The 1880 census of Wyandotte, Kansas needs to be read and probably the 1900 looked into as well as vitals for that county. If he continued to do well and stayed there, he may appear in a history.
