He died on 18 Dec 1897 in USA, Iowa, Jones Co., Monticello.293,295 The death of Herman Peters of this city occurred suddenly last Saturday at his home in this city. Mr. Peters was born in Hanover, Germany, in 1841. He was married to Anna Friedrichs in May 1865. They came to New York in 1866 and to Jones county, Iowa in 1868 where they engaged in farming for a period of 13 years, and then removed to Monticello. Their family consisted of 12 children, eight of whom are living and all of them excepting a married daughter, Mrs. Hubbell of Nebraska, were present at the funeral services, which were conducted in the German Reformed Church of which Mrs. Peters is a member, Rev. E. Gruenstien the pastor conducting the series in German, who was followed by Rev. David Street who spoke in English. The services were held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday Dec., 21st and the interment was Oakwood cemetery. Mr. Peters was a member of the order of Odd Fellows, and the members were present at the funeral service. Anna's obituary says Mr and Mrs Peters came to the US after 3 years of marriage (1867), stayed in New York State 3 yrs, then moved to Iowa (1870) She was German Reformed between 1870 and 1913 in USA, Iowa, Jones Co., Monticello. She died of cancer of the stomach on 6 Sep 1913 in USA, Iowa, Jones Co., Monticello.295 Mrs. Peter Ommen died, at home, last Saturday evening, after a long and severe illness. She had been confined to her bed for a number of weeks before her death with cancer of the stomach. Hence her death was not unexpected. Mrs. Ommen was of a jovial nature, and always had a good word for everyone. She was a friendly neighbor and had a wide range of friends. She was born in the province of Hanover, Germany, September 28, 1843. She lived with her parents in the Fatherland, and was married there in the year 1864 to Herman Peters. Mr. and Mrs. Peters remained in Germany for three years and then removed to the United States. They first settled in New York state, and three years later came to Monticello, where they lived for a long time. Later they moved to Langworthy, where they resided on a farm for a number of years. They then returned to Monticello, where Mr. Peters died, December 18, 1897. In 1899, Mrs. Peters married Peter Ommen, who survives her. Mrs. Ommen was the mother of twelve children, four of whom are dead and eight survive. The survivors are as follows: Mrs. William Hubbel, of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Henry Eilers, of Monticello; Mrs. Ed. Eilers, of Monticello; Henry Peters, of Chicago; Mrs. John Wenger, of Monticello; Mrs. Peter Jock, of Cedar Rapids; Mrs. John Olmstead, of Waterloo; and George Peters, of Waterloo. The funeral services were conducted, yesterday afternoon, by Rev. Roland Kuntsel, of the German Reformed church, and interment was had at Oakwood cemetery. Mrs. Ommen will be kindly remembered for a long time because of her gentle sympathy for those in distress, her genial disposition and her interest in the happiness of those about her.
