284. Jesse (Francis) BARFIELD554,555,556,564,760 was born on 21 Jan 1737 in USA, North Carolina, Duplin Co..554,761 1738 (J. Tew)
Scotland Neck, Halifax, Co., NC given as birth place by Cheryl Castilaw. He died on 22 Aug 1780 in USA, South Carolina, Kershaw Co., Camden.554,556 "Jessie... died near the close of the (Revolutionay) War while driving beef-cattle to the Patriot army. He was taken suddenly ill and died away from home, although it was but a few miles distant." (from the memoirs of Pauline Craig Hughes)
This is similar to a story in Goodspeeds History of Tennessee which indicates that Jesse B. Barfield and his son Frederick were in the Battle of Camden South Carolina and that Jesse died at the home of a relative five days after the Battle. There is also an application to General Marion for payment for a horse, saddle, and bridle made by Jesse's wife according to Mr. Glen Barfield, a descendant of Jesse the Tory. (Fletcher Freeman)

Jesse Barfield has a small file at the NC State Archives. He died in 1780 soon after writing deeds giving away his worldly goods to his youngest sons, Lewis, John, and Thomas who were still at home when he died. His youngest son Thomas, received his estate. The adminstrator was Frederick Barfield. (Tew) He served in the military American Revolution in USA, North Carolina. From research by Judge Fletcher Freeman -
A Jesse Barfield, along with a Solomon Barfield (probably his brother) and a James Barfield are shown as enlisted men in the 2nd regiment of South Carolina at the Battle of Ft. Sullivan, later called Ft. Moultrie, in Charleston in 1776 at which battle the British were defeated. Francis Marion was the commander of this regiment.
There appears to have been two or more Jesse Barfields living and dying in close proximity to each other during this time period. One was a Tory Loyalist who fought against Francis Marion and one appears to have been a soldier serving under Marion.
The book "Soldiers, Sailors, and Descendants" shows Jesse Barfield as a patriot and gives the dates 1738 thru 1780 and shows that he was married to a Sara Castillo.

These guys detailed in a new book from the Sampson County Historical

(from the memoirs of Pauline Craig Hughes)
"My great grandfather, Jesse Barfield, - a son of the emigrant - lived in Samson County, N.C., and there my grandfather, Lewis Barfield, was raised. .... Jesse married Sarah Castelo, daughter of Thomas Castelo, an Irishman. To Jesse and Sarah Barfield were born nine children, seven of which reached maturity - Frederic, Stephen, Charity, Solomon, Lewis, John and Thomas."

"In Madison County, Tennessee, on 21st November, in the 71st year of his age, Frederick Barfield, Esq., a native of this state and a patriot of the Revolution." RaNCSw, published 8 Jan., 1829.
I have reviewed the wills of Madison County up to 1835 and there is none for Frederick Barfield. I find some deeds in Rutherford where Frederick is a resident of the District of West Tennessee, some as a resident of Madison and Stewart Counties.

(from the memoirs of Pauline Craig Hughes)
" Frederic was twice married. After his marriage he lived in Tennessee near Stone River. One of his daughters, Susan - by the first marriage - married Needham Bryan, and about 1836, moved from Tennessee to Alabama.
During the Revolutionary War, when he was quite a young man and still living in North Carolina, he and his brother Solomon were fired upon by some of their Tory neighbors. He was seriously wounded and Solomon shot down. Frederic managed to get home, leaving his brother, as he thought, dead. Late in the night the family heard someone moaning as if in distress. Some of them went out to investigate and found Solomon crawling slowly and painfully toward the house. They carried him in and did what they could to relieve his sufferings, but he died before morning dawned.
Frederic recovered and lived many years, suddenly dying of apoplexy."

October 18, 1784
Frederick Barfield, Justice was ordered to take a list of the taxables for Captain Barfield's Company- (It appears that the county was divided into five or more "companies" each of which were named after a "captain". One of the companies in the 1780's was named Captain Barfield's Company.) Each company had a Justice of the Peace and a Constable. They were probably analogous to modern day precincts in a county. The Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions for the period 1791 thru 1795 made some references to a Barfield bridge and a Barfield road.
January 21, 1788
Frederick Barfield was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace.

He died about 1781 in USA, North Carolina.578,761,776 Died after aft 24 Jan 1780, a deed of gift transferring property to Jessie and Sarah's sons dated January 24, 1780 mentions Solomon.

Solomon of Duplin Co. NC 1781 article "Solomon killed and his brother Frederick wounded - young men." (Edwards) He served in the military.774 BARFIELD, Solomon, Martyr, North Carolina. Solomon Barfield was not in the Militia. He was born on June 8, 1765 and shot by a Tory neighbor named Wilson and some of the Bass boys in 1779-1780 at age 14-15. He was the son of Jesse and Sarah Costello Barfield. During the Revolutionary War, when Solomon and brother Frederick were quite young and still living in North Carolina, he and his brother were fired upon in their corn field by some of their Tory neighbors because their father was serving in the Militia. Frederick was seriously wounded and Solomon was shot down, mortally wounded. Frederick managed to get home, leaving his brother, as he thought, dead. Late in the night the family heard someone moaning as if in distress. Some of them went out to investigate and found Solomon crawling slowly and painfully toward the house. They carried him in and did what they could to relieve his sufferings, but Solomon died before morning dawned. Frederick recovered and lived many years, suddenly dying of apoplexy in Madison Co. TN in 1828. John and Rice Bass and Absolon Davis were in the party that waylaid the two young Barfield boys in their own cornfield. All three discharged their guns at the two Barfields and they executed the younger Solomon Barfield, he soon died of his wounds. Frederick Barfield recovered after some months under a doctor's care.
Solomon was shot to death by Tory neighbors during the Revolutionary War. See story by Pauline Craig under Frederic Barfield.
Also,
From a family history written by Castillo Barfield dated 25 April 1886. In it he states -
"Solomon Barfield was born in Sampson Co., NC 28 June 1765. He was murdered by the Tories at 14 yrs. of age by a family by the name of Wilson -- who also shot Uncle Fredrick at the same time but did not kill him. Wilson was afterward tried and shot."

8 May 1784, Duplin Co., NC:
A petition to the NC State Assembly notes offences in Duplin and Wayne Cos by Tories and Loyalists, specifically three Basses: Rice, Harman, John; and an Absalom Davis
Victims included :
Mt (Mr. or Matthew?) Whitfield, whose house and storehouse were broken into & arms, ammunition among articles stolen. NOTE: His name is written this way several times.
Rob*d Hooks, whose cart was robbed when he was moving for safety; horse stolen Capt. Otiey Williams, was waylaid; horse shot
Capt. Blanchard, house robbed of arms, etc.
Franks, Blackshear and Becton (no given names) were murdered by group which
included the Basses.
Solomon & Frederick Bearfield (2 young men) were in their cornfield when they were shot (Basses & Absalom Davis involved)
John Stevenson, murdered in his home; wife present
George Kornegay was met in the woods by Herman Bass, who shot him in the arm, & when Kornegay fled into Miry Swamp, Bass pursued him in effort to kill him.
Capt. Blanshard and Charles Hames proposed raising group to pursue the perpetrators. Their mill was burned to the ground.
John and Rice Bass were caught and imprisoned for the murder of Solomon Bearfield (Frederick recovered) but they escaped.

An interesting note from the research of Fletcher Freeman -
January 1792
Frederick Barfield is named as the administrator of the estate of Jesse Barfield who had an orphaned minor child named Solomon.

?? Which Jesse with son Solomon is this? Frederick's father died 1780, and mother 1828, would his younger brother Solomon be called an orphan by the courts in 1792? Maybe this is the Solomon that married Sarah Crow?

John BARFIELD555,771 was born on 2 Jun 1770 in USA, North Carolina, Sampson Co..167,367,554 J. Tew's research lists 1760. (from the memoirs of Pauline Craig Hughes)
" John was of a roving disposition - hard to satisty. He came to Alabama and remained with Lewis Barfield for awhile, but returned to Tennessee. Later he rambled off and the relatives lost all trace of him for several years and had given him up as dead. After his nephew Thomas Barfield went to Yazoo County to live he heard that there was a feeble old man by the name of Barfield in a town some distance away. Thomas visited the place and found the feeble old man to be his long-lost uncle. Like the good samaritan, he supplied his needs and hired an attendant for him, intending to remove him to his own home as soon as the invalid would be strong enough to be moved. But John never rallied and died in a few days."
