Q & A Questions & Answers

E-mail your horse-related question to Kerry Randall at: randall@saber.net.

Q. My saddles are green with mold from sitting in my tack room all winter. What's the best way to clean them?

A. I referred this question to Pam Brown. Actually, I refer a lot of these questions to her. I don't know anyone in the area whose advice I respect more when it comes to advice on horse equipment. (Thanks, Pam!)

To remove mold from leather you need lots of clean rags and a good leather soap or cleaner. (Come into Rainbow; our service reps are very knowledgeable and could easily recommend the right cleaner.) First, remove as much of the mold as possible with a paper towel then use your cleaner and a rag to carefully wipe each section. Don't want to spread the mold or rub it into the leather. Let the saddle dry completely in a warm dry place. Do not put it near a heater or fireplace. When leather is completely dry, use a good conditioner over all. Mold loves leather and will spread and reappear if leather is kept in a damp area!

Q. I've noticed that some people use shavings in their trailer. Why?

A. Personally, I use shavings for several reasons. 1) I like the absorbency; it keeps the floor from getting slick so the horse can stand more steadily. 2) It also creates some insulation from road heat in the summer.

Q. I know this is a loaded question but, really, why are the horse senior diets different?

A. Well, that is a loaded question, but one I'm not afraid to answer. I use Purina Equine Senior and I'll tell you why. Purina has a patented process of "pre-cooking" the forage they use for Equine Senior. This means that when the product mixes with moisture it breaks down almost completely so older horses absorb and digest more nutrition. Even horses that no longer have their teeth can do quite well if you feed them a gruel made out of Equine Senior.
