The Road to Wounded Knee

Some say the road to Wounded Knee started when the American Indian Movement formed. It was formed in response to crimes against Native American's that were being ignored in Missouri. They later spread to become a nationwide Native American Rights association.

Others say it started with the election of Dick Wilson. He was elected tribal chairman with false promises and bribes. He was reelected only by false ballots, including some from dead people and people who didn't live on the Pine Ridge reservation.

After Dick Wilson's reelection the residents of Wounded Knee went to he American Indian Movement for help. After he realized what was going on Wilson banned the American Indian Movement from Wounded Knee and hired his "goon squad" a group of men chosen for their brawn and not their brains.

Seeing what the U.S. government had done to them by setting up tribal chair-people the Native American's inside Wounded Knee and the American Indian Movement decided to do something about it.
