Wounded Knee, 1890 and 1973: Site of Cultural Revolutions for Native Americans

Wounded Knee, South Dakota. It is the poorest places in the United States. To someone who hasn't learned of its history, it seems to just be a small town. The two most prominent buildings are its general store and Sacred Heart Church.

To someone who knows its history, it is much more. The general store is where much need supplies were given to those who needed it in 1973. The church stands for many things. In 1890, Native Americans looking for warmth were turned away from the church days before they were killed. Later their bodies were buried in a ditch dug alongside it. In 1973 Native Americans took shelter there during their takeover of Wounded Knee.

Today these two buildings still stand, and it is still the poorest place in the United States
