<personality>A serious man who takes life very seriously.  He feels responsible for anything that he gets involved in, and believes (sometimes foolishly) that he himself is capable of handling most any situation.  Doesn't easily get close to others.</personality>
<background>A career military man, his service and discretion, together with an undergraduate education in Physics, eventually had him posted to secret military experiments underground near Brookhaven, NY on Long Island.  Although the civilian Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider only began operation in 2000, several years previously a much more capable, highly-secret military version was turned on with disastrous consequences.  Nearly everybody was killed when a number of million-kilogram black holes were  (surprisingly) produced.  During the crisis, Reyes discovered his until-then-latent ability to control gravity; with his abilities, he was somehow (harnessing forces that he has not since been able to reproduce) able to contain the created miniature black holes until they evaporated on their own due to Hawking Radition, over the course of a few hours.

After this ordeal, Reyes was retired honorably and with various medals from the military, and all records of his services were expunged.  He was given the new name (Fernando Reyes) and a new face, although he still uses his military title (which many people think is just an affectation, although they don't deny he has an intimate familiarity with the military).</background>
