Selling abalone is a serious violation of sport fishing regulations. Equally prohibited is trading or bartering abalone. These restrictions apply to any and all parts of the animal including the meat and its shell. Violators of these commercial restrictions have been receiving increasingly harsh treatment by Sonoma County courts with sentences that range up to 3 years in state prison and a $40,000 fine.
