White Abalone

White abalone are on the verge of extinction. That's a pretty surprising place for these animals to be; for decades, scientists have believed that extincting a marine invertebrate would be an incredibly difficult task to accomplish. It looks like commercial and recreational harvesting of these animals, with the "help" of CDFG and FGC laissez-faire management policies (before finally closing the fishery in 1993, annual commercial landings in pounds, had shrunk to single and double digits), has accomplished the incredibly difficult. White abalone were listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act in May of 2001.
