A sentencing hearing to determine if three abalone
poachers should be sent to prison will continue Thursday with
further testimony from defense experts.
Prosecutors are recommending the trio, Jason Diep, 31,
of El Monte, Loi Diep, 30, of Rosemead, and Christopher Doan,
30, of Cupertino, go to prison for conducting the biggest ever
illegal operation involving North Coast abalone. The
Probation Department has recommended jail sentences.
The three pleaded guilty to conspiracy to buy sport
abalone and sell if for commercial purposes.
Defense attorneys this week are presenting testimony to
rebut prosecutors' contention regarding the size of the crime.
The lengthy hearing will resume Thursday before Superior Court
Judge Lawrence G. Antolini, who is weighing the testimony to
determine punishment for the three.
