Three suspects arrested in May in one of the biggest
abalone poaching cases in California history were
ordered on Thursday to stand trial in Sonoma County Superior
Court.
At the conclusion of a daylong preliminary hearing,
visiting Municipal Court Judge Carol Koppel ordered the
defendants to appear before Superior Court Judge Lawrence
Antolini.
The defendants -- Chris N. Doan, 29, Cupertino; Jason Diep,
30, El Monte; and Loi Boa Diep, 29, Rosemead -- face felony
poaching conspiracy charges.
The suspects, who are alleged to have made illegal
purchases of abalone taken on the Sonoma County coast,
were arrested after Fish and Game officials seized about 3,000
abalone from the defendants' homes and businesses in
San Francisco and Los Angeles.
Initially, officials said 1,700 abalone valued
at $234,000 were seized. But on Thursday, a game warden
testified that 3,000 abalone were seized, but more than
half of them could have been from Mexico.
