A six-week abalone poaching investigation culminated
Friday with the arrests of three Santa Rosa residents
suspected of illegally taking Sonoma Coast abalone at
night and then selling them.
Investigators with the state Department of Fish and
Game said they watched two of the suspects use scuba equipment
to harvest abalone, a spokesman said. Undercover agents
also purchased abalone from the pair on three
occasions, the spokesman said.
Arrested Friday on suspicion of harvesting abalone
and selling it near Fort Ross were Van Do, 51, and Nam Ngo,
22. Fish and game officers also arrested a third suspect,
Doanh Nguyen, 42, on suspicion that she helped set up an
illegal sale of poached abalone.
All three were booked later Friday into Sonoma County
jail. Bail was set at $15,000 for Ngo and at $10,000 for the
others.
State law prohibits the taking of North Coast
abalone with scuba gear, and also the selling of
abalone.
Fish and Game investigators posed as commercial vendors
and made three separate buys from the pair, the spokesman
said.
