An Oakland man was sentenced to 16 months in state prison
and his brother was sentenced to nine months in county jail
for their role in a poaching ring that sold abalone
taken from the Sonoma County coast.
Kim Keung Gee, 45, was convicted in September of
conspiracy and violations of state Fish and Game laws. He was
sentenced Thursday by Superior Court Judge Elaine Watters.
Deputy District Attorney Brooke Halsey said Gee was a
leader of the poaching ring, which sold abalone on the
black market for up to $85 each. Members told undercover
agents they could supply up to 200 pounds of abalone a
week, according to court records. They employed a network of
divers to take abalone from several spots along the
Sonoma Coast, including Salt Point State Park.
Gee's brother, Kin Wah Gee, 43, was placed on three
years' probation, sentenced to jail and fined $20,000. Kin Wah
Gee, also of Oakland, was convicted by a jury in September.
