Death Rock isn't included because of it's great abalone diving; it doesn't have any and the diving is boring sand. It is included because it's a powerful reminder that the north coast ocean can be very dangerous for the unwary. The rock itself is easily accessible and it is a powerful lure at getting the unknowledgable and arrogant to climb aboard. Once on the rock, you're on a relatively flat shelf that juts into the water and offers a great vantage point. The only problem is Sneaker or Rogue waves. With heartbreaking regularity, the local newspaper has stories of individuals and couples who venture onto Death Rock only to get hit by an unexpected wave. Once hit, a fair percentage end up in water up against a short but effective rock cliff. Those who aren't strong swimmers, or fail to make an immediate decision to head for the sandy shore some hundred yards away, often as not are lost.
