March 1999 Update

At the San Jose meeting of the Recreational Abalone Advisory Committee in March 1999, Dr. Carolyn Friedman reported on the latest developments concerning Withering Syndrome. The news was lousy.

Progressing from south to north, Dr. Friedman's team has so far tested four sites, all of which turned up positive for rickettsia and/or clinical withering syndrome. They've progressed as far north as Pacifica where they found Withering Syndrome in wild RED abalone. They have yet to test areas farther north.

Other news about Withering Syndrome includes the discovery that rickettsia infestation can be water borne (no contacted with infected animals is needed). They've also been successful in using antibiotics to treat infected animals. CDFG is not going to take action to deal with rickettsia infested aquaculture facilities unless and until they've scientifically established rickettsia as the causative agent for Withering Syndrome. Rickettsia infested facilities are up and down the entire California coast line.
