Michael Taylor, a 14-year-old Bakersfield resident has won 1st place in the

among the entrants in the Under 1400 section, with an official rating of

1305, and came away with the $245 first prize award and trophy. This was

only the second adult tournament that Michael has competed in. Michael is

Greatest Upset

My November 6, 2004 chess tournament results were:

Round 1, My Opponent fell asleep and I won (he got last place) with 0.0 points

Round 2, I beat someone rated 523 (he got 11th place) with 2.0 points

Round 3, I beat someone rated 1546 (he got 3rd place) with 3.5 points

Round 4, I beat someone rated 1343 (he got 4th place) with 3.5 points

Round 5, I tied with someone rated 1414 (he got 2nd place) with 3.5 points

I got 4.5 points out of 5 and got 1st place.

If two people get the same number of points, the people who played the hardest people win the tiebreaker.

My round 5 opponent was the only person to manage a tie against me, so he got 2nd place instead of my round 3 and round 4 opponents even though all three of them had the same number of points at the end of the tournament.

My round 3 and round 4 opponents were my teammates. Our team got 1st place with a total of 11.5 points.

The second place team winners had six people!

Michael's new trophy

I beat someone rated 988, he got 6th place with 4.0 points I beat someone rated 814, he got 14th place with 3.0 points I beat someone rated 1039, he got 3rd place with 4.0 points I lost to someone rated 1355, he got 1st place with 5.0 points I beat someone rated 1275, he got 8th place with 3.5 points I got 2nd place with 4.0 points.<

MICKE'S B....I....G 2ND PLACE TROPHY!!

THE BOTTOM LINE

I played in a local tournament last weekend and went 5-0 perfect.

Iwas initially ranked 1st in ratings: in the first two rounds I beat two easy people

who were rated under 1250, and in the last three rounds, I defeated numbers 4, 3, and 2

whose ratings ranged from 1300-1700.

It was like I had to win the tournament otherwise

I'd be losing to players who wern't as strong as I was.

I finished a chess tournament last Saturday on the 25th of February in Bakersfield. There were five rounds and I was initially ranked #2 in ratings, but I finished with a perfect 5-0 score, winning 1st place, and the #1 player finished with 3-2, only getting 6th place. He lost to a girl in the second round, and later lost to me in the last round. By the end of the tournament, I was almost 100 points above the former #1 player.
