 Cut to the Chase

Here is a sample set of directions from Sonoma Interconnect, an Internet connection service provider, about how to create a Web directory and upload files, once your access to their service is established.

Connection to a service involves particular software and another set of instructions about system configurations which the provider gives you and which vary according to your format and system.

A more complete list of Northern California ISP's (Internet Service Providers) may be obtained HERE.

Getting Connected

Q: How do I connect to my shell account?

  1. If you have a program called 'Telnet' or can download one and configure it, then you can connect your usual way and just open Telnet. When it asks you to log in, since you have already made your PPP connection, you need to login through telnet as your login name. HINT: don't use .ppp
  2. If you don't have the program (telnet) then you need to dial into your shell account by using a modem dialer program. This is not Trumpet Winsock. This program will not let you use Netscape or any graphical program, it connects you to a shell, which is text-only.

World Wide Web

Q: How do I get a web directory on sonic.net (or whatever service)?

A: Use Telnet to access your Service Provider, Login to your shell account and type: wwwme. This will create your Web directory and give you some information.Take the time to write down what it tells you:

  1. Your Web directory path /home/WWW_pages/loginname You will need this path when you are uploading your Web pages. loginname is your login name on sonic.net
  2. Your URL (Uniform Resource Locator) http://www.sonic.net/~loginname This is the address you use with your Web browser to see your pages. loginname is your login name on sonic.net.

Q: How do I upload my pages to my web directory on sonic.net?

A: Uploading a file is dependent on the type of account that you have,(shell or PPP) and the type of software you have. To upload a file to your web directory you must do one of the following:

  1. If you have an FTP program, connect to your PPP account (Which you receive from your Service Provider, along with Installation Software and Instructions) and open the FTP program and login with your user name and password (joe not joe.ppp).
  2. After you login, you need to change your directory to your web directory. This directory will be: /home/WWW_pages/loginname .loginname is your login name on sonic.net
  3. The program should have some way of putting files in your directory so look for a PUT command or button. Select your file from your WebPage Folder on your hard drive and put it in your directory.

REMEMBER: ALL FILES THAT YOU PUT IN YOUR WEB DIRECTORY MUST HAVE EITHER THE .html SUFFIX (PAGE FILES) OR THE .gif OR .jpeg SUFFIX (IMAGE FILES).THIS IS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT. A BROWSER WILL NOT LOAD THEM IF THEY ARE IMPROPERLY TAGGED.

Or, login to your shell account with a dialer program (z-term or terminal depending on your machine). Follow the directions above for changing to your web directory and upload with a protocol like z-modem which you start by typing rz at the shell prompt ($).

If you don't have an FTP program and want one, try looking at:

http://www.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Software/

and select your computer type (Mac or PC) and look for software archives and select a FTP program.

(If you are a Macintosh user, see this site for both Telnet and FTP software.)

Q: What is my web page address?

A: If you have a Web directory and have uploaded your Web pages to sonic.net then you can view your pages with a Web browser. Your Web page address is called a URL.

Your default URL is http://www.sonic.net/~loginname

Where loginname is your login name on sonic.net.

Q: What is a URL?

* http This is the protocol, Hypertext Transfer Protocol

* www.sonic.net This is the domain where the page is stored, in this case you see the domain
