Here is a sample set of directions from Sonoma Interconnect, an Internet connection service provider, about how to create a Web directory and upload files, once your access to their service is established.
Connection to a service involves particular software and another set of instructions about system configurations which the provider gives you and which vary according to your format and system.

Q: How do I join Sonoma Interconnect?
A: To subscribe to Sonoma Interconect you must complete and sign the signup sheet. To obtain a signup sheet you may do one of the following:

A: Use Telnet to access your Service Provider, Login to your shell account and type: wwwme. This will create your Web directory and give you some information.Take the time to write down what it tells you:
Q: How do I upload my pages to my web directory on sonic.net?
A: Uploading a file is dependent on the type of account that you have,(shell or PPP) and the type of software you have. To upload a file to your web directory you must do one of the following:

Or, login to your shell account with a dialer program (z-term or terminal depending on your machine). Follow the directions above for changing to your web directory and upload with a protocol like z-modem which you start by typing rz at the shell prompt ($).
If you don't have an FTP program and want one, try looking
at:
http://www.yahoo.com/Computers_and_Internet/Software/
and select your computer type (Mac or PC) and look for software archives
and select a FTP program.

Q: What is my web page address?
A: If you have a Web directory and have uploaded your Web
pages to sonic.net then you can view your pages with a Web browser. Your
Web page address is called a URL.
Your default URL is http://www.sonic.net/~loginname
Where loginname is your login name on sonic.net.
A: A URL is a Uniform Resource Locator. URLs are used by Web browsers to find Web pages. A typical URL looks like:
http://www.sonic.net/help/faq.html
* http This is the protocol, Hypertext Transfer Protocol
* www.sonic.net This is the domain where the page is stored,
in this case you see the domain
sonic.net
* /help A directory on sonic.net.
* /faq.html The HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) page in the /help directory.
Q: How do I get an FTP directory on sonic.net?
A: Login to your shell account and type: ftpme
This will create your FTP directory and give you some information.
Take the time to write down what it tells you:
1. Your FTP directory path /pub/users/loginname You will need this path when you are uploading your files. loginname is your login name on sonic.net.
2. Your URL (Uniform Resource Locator) ftp://ftp.sonic.net/pub/users/loginname This is the address you use with your Web browser to see your FTP directory. loginname is your login name on sonic.net.
Q: How do I get an CGI directory on sonic.net?
A: * Login to your shell account and type: cgime
* Read the questions asked of you and answer them.
* If you agree to the rules, your cgi directory will be created
* You will see some important information.
* Take the time to write down what it tells you:
1. Your CGI directory path /usr/local/lib/httpd/cgi-bin/loginname You will need this path when you are uploading your files. loginname is your login name on sonic.net.
2. Your URL (Uniform Resource Locator) http://www.sonic.net/cgi-bin/loginname/programname This is the address you use with your Web browser to see your CGI program or output. loginname is your login name on sonic.net.
